Honoring Julian Barnard’s Legacy

by Richard Katz and Patricia Kaminski

Our esteemed colleague Julian Barnard (1947-2026) departed from the earthly realm on September 13, 2026. Julian left an outstanding legacy of research regarding the original Bach flower remedies, including a complete video library of each plant and its habitat, as well as superbly detailed photographic studies and notable publications regarding the discoveries of Dr. Edward Bach. He founded and developed Healing herbs Ltd in order to offer the Bach flower remedies from plant sources of the highest possible quality and habitat integrity. Furthermore, the worldwide community of Bach flower practitioners is deeply indebted to him for his courageous, hard-fought legal victory that allows the free use of Dr. Edward Bach’s name beyond purely commercial and corporate interests.

A Deep Devotion to the Plants of Dr. Bach
and their Living Signatures in Nature

Julian established his home and his Healing herbs cottage industry in Herefordshire, in sight of the heather-covered Sugarloaf Mountain just over the border of Wales. The majestic River Usk flows in nearby Wales, where Dr. Bach made his first flower essences of Impatiens and Mimulus in 1928.

For Julian, the plants of Dr. Bach were powerfully alive, calling him with great intensity. His lifelong passion was to understand their very soul, and further – how Dr. Bach’s soul lived into these plants. We had the privilege of walking with Julian to encounter many of these plants, such as the Chestnuts, Beech, Holly and Heather. We were struck by the shining light in Julian’s eyes, and his ardent quest to truly live into each plant in order to understand its signature and healing essence. Julian searched constantly for the very best habitats where the highest qualities of each plant could be found. For example, Julian showed us that the original habitat where Dr. Bach prepared the flower remedy of the Elm tree was now ravaged by Dutch Elm disease. He searched widely to find a new, pristine location as he did for many other plants no longer thriving in their original locations due to industrial pollution or real estate development.

The Writings of Julian Barnard:
Shining New Light on Dr. Bach’s Discoveries

Through his authentic, living relationship to the Bach flowers, Julian brought new illumination and inspiration for Dr. Bach’s discoveries. In particular, Dr. Bach left therapeutic indications for each of his plants, but very little exploration for how these qualities could be understood within the plants themselves. Featuring astute, direct observations of each plant and insightful reflections regarding their healing signatures, Julian first published The Healing Herbs of Edward Bach: An Illustrated Guide to the Flower Remedies (now available in a new edition Bach Flower Remedies: the essence within) . His further seminal work, Form and Function delves even deeper into the marvels and mysteries of each plant and their relationship to the human soul. Julian added to this reservoir of knowledge with other supplementary publications, photographic studies and a complete video library exploring the habitat and language of plant form, color and growth patterns in each of Dr. Bach’s plants.

Moreover, Julian devoted himself to the considerable task of gathering all of Dr. Bach’s various writings, including his indications for making the remedies. This noteworthy and very valuable compendium is published as one single volume, The Collected Writings of Edward Bach.

A Courageous Legal Battle and Landmark Legal Decision to Free Dr. Bach’s Name & Legacy

Julian shared Dr. Bach’s firm belief that freedom is the hallmark of healing and human well-being. Dr. Bach departed from the restrictions of medical hierarchy and orthodoxy, in order to ensure that his plant discoveries would be freely available to the whole of humanity without restriction. Unfortunately, following his death, Dr. Bach’s name was sanctioned as a trademark and monopolized for commercial interests. Those practitioners, teachers and authors who pursued a free cultural association with Dr. Bach’s therapeutic legacy were subject to various forms of threat and intimidation as well as actual lawsuits.

With immense courage and conviction, including great expenditures of time and financial resources, Julian waged a series of intense legal challenges spanning nearly one dozen years. These exacting court battles in both the United Kingdom and the European Union overturned the commercial trademarks that had claimed ownership of Bach’s name. In the United Kingdom, Julian carried these legal battles all the way to House of Lords, the highest court of appeals. In 2008 he then went further to establish a decisive legal victory with the trademarks office representing the entire European Union.

There are no adequate words to describe the valor of soul, steadfast resolution and mental fortitude that was required to achieve these victories. The importance of these landmark legal decisions has enormous consequences – most significantly, the separation of Bach’s name from a purely commercial reality has allowed his legacy of healing to be freely shared with the world as Dr. Bach himself intended.

Plant Remedies of the Highest Integrity and Purity –
The Healing Herbs of Dr. Bach

After Bach’s death in 1936, the preparation of the flower remedies was continued by his devoted assistant, Nora Weeks, along with Victor Bullen. Nickie Murray, joined Nora Weeks in 1962, and was trained in essence preparation, including the identification of  the correct species and habitat for each of the Bach remedies.

In 1978, Nora Weeks died, giving responsibility for carrying out Dr. Bach’s work to Nickie Murray, who was joined by her brother, John Ramsell. Nickie trained Julian Barnard in the preparation of the Bach remedies and suggested the he would be the appropriate successor. However, the Bach Center came under the control of John Ramsell after Nickie Murray left in 1988 to pursue spiritual service. The flower essence business of the Bach Centre (Bach Flower Remedies, Ltd) was subsequently sold to the corporate entity A. Nelson & Co., Ltd in 1993.

With Nickie Murray’s encouragement, Julian Barnard founded Healingherbs in 1988 to prepare flower remedies according to the original indications and methods of Dr. Bach. Julian’s profound devotion to and precise knowledge of each of Dr. Bach’s remedies, as well as his high standards of integrity and precision in the manufacture of the remedies has resulted in a company valued by practitioners throughout the world. Julian leaves behind a highly dedicated and trained professional team, who will continue to make the Healing Herbs of Dr. Bach remedies available worldwide.
